About Ethan Yan

Ethan Yan attends Groton School, where he excels academically and serves as a student leader across multiple disciplines. Passionate about applying technology to real-world problems in biomedical engineering, he has developed AI-based research projects that detect leukemia and eye tumors in low-resource settings, earning multiple awards at top science competitions. Beyond research, he collaborates with hospitals to translate innovations into practical impact.

At Groton, Ethan founded the Science Research Club, organizes the school’s first science fair, and mentors peers in independent research. As a Music Prefect, he leads performances and fosters creativity within the music community. He also edits The Circle Voice (school newspaper) and The Forum (Latin journal), while heading the Linguistics and Computer Science Clubs. Outside school, he directs Piano Forte Youth Music, a youth organization performing across the Bay Area at hospitals and senior homes.

My Story

My name is Ethan. I grew up in California, but I chose to pursue a unique high school experience by attending a boarding school across the country in Massachusetts. At school, I love writing, journalism, exploring math and science, delving into history, and mastering Latin, while connecting with friends from around the world. Outside the classroom, I enjoy playing piano and double bass in the school chamber groups and orchestra, and swimming on our school’s varsity team. I am also an aviation enthusiast and am currently training for my private pilot’s license.

My Mission

As a cancer survivor, I am passionate about computational technology and dedicated to harnessing it for the development of practical solutions to challenges in healthcare.
